September 16th Luncheon – Alan Hunter
Join the Rotaract Club of Birmingham for a luncheon meeting Thursday, September 16th at the Harbert Center featuring Alan Hunter, one of the original MTV VJs, co-owner of Workplay and co-founder of the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival. Alan will discuss the upcoming Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival, along with its economic impact on the area, its history, and its plan for the future.
Rotaract meets on the first and third Thursdays at the Harbert Center located in downtown Birmingham. Lunch starts at 11:45 a.m. and meetings begin promptly at noon. About Alan Hunter
Alan Hunter became part of American pop culture during his years as one of the original MTV VJs. He currently appears on SiriusXM Satellite Radio as one of the hosts for the “Big 80’s” channel.
He was the host for the Starz Channel’s original series “Looking For Stars”, and has hosted Encore’s annual “Big 80’s Movie Weekend” since 2004.
He formed Hunter Films in 1995 and in 2003, the company received an Academy Award nomination for the short film JOHNNY FLYNTON. Hunter Films also executive-produced the feature film DREAMLAND, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2006, as well as the documentary film BEST WORST MOVIE which premiered at the SXSW film festival in 2009. The company recently wrapped principal photography on the feature film LIFTED, starring Trace Adkins and Ruben Studdard, slated for 2010 release.
Hunter is co-owner of the entertainment complex WorkPlay in downtown Birmingham, Alabama and the co-founder and president of the board of the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival. Sidewalk was named by Movie Maker Magazine as the “Best Kept Secret” among US independent film festivals, as well as one of Time Magazine’s Top Ten “Festivals for the Rest of Us”.
Locally, Hunter has been instrumental in strengthening the business of film in Alabama with the formation of the Birmingham-Jefferson Regional Film Office. He sits on the board of AIDS Alabama and the Alabama School of Fine Arts, and he founded the civic action group Catalyst to bring about positive change in the city of Birmingham.
