Become a 2nd Grade Reading Buddy

Did you know that for only one hour a month you can help fight illiteracy? Have you always wanted to be involved with Rotaract’s international award winning signature service project—Ready 2 Read? If the answers are yes, you need to be a Reading Buddy.

We are recruiting Reading Buddies for the upcoming school year. Each Reading Buddy is asked to commit to reading to their assigned classroom one a month. Reading Buddies are vital to the success of Ready 2 Read, and as our project, we need all our members to volunteer.

August 7th Service – School Supply Give Away

For the third straight year, the Rotaract Club of Birmingham is the title sponsor for Birmingham City Councilor Roderick Royal’s 5th Annual District 9 “Back 2 School – Equipped 2 Learn” school supply give away. Rotaract will be distributing school supplies to over 500 children at locations throughout District 9.

Rotaract is pleased to sponsor this project, which makes a tremendous impact on our community. With great economic challenges still facing our community, many students do not have the basic supplies they need to help them begin the new school year. This project equips these students with what they need to be ready to learn from day one.

The Club will need at least 5 volunteers at each location to help distribute supplies to children and families. In order to participate in this exciting service project, register online. For more information about this project, contact Willard McCall at willardmccall@hotmail.com

Rotaract Hears from Birmingham Students about Ready 2 Read

The Rotaract Club of Birmingham and its service partner, Better Basics, recently received letters from several students who benefited from the Club’s award-winning service project, Ready 2 Read. Each year, Rotaract helps place full libraries in the second grade classrooms of Birmingham schools. The Club also provides volunteer Reading Buddies, who take time each month to read to the children. Rotaractors interested in becoming a Reading Buddy can register online.

July 3rd Service – P.E.E.R. East Lake Farmers Market

Get outside and serve on Saturday, July 3^rd from 7:00 a.m. to noon at the P.E.E.R. East Lake Farmers Market. P.E.E.R. (Powering Empowerment and Enrichment Resources) is a community development group designed to draw resources and provide information and education concerning existing resources to the South East Lake neighborhood. Rotaract will help set up tents and tables and will fill baskets of fresh fruits and vegetables to deliver to nearby senior living facilities. Rotaractors will also help serve a pancake breakfast and assist with the Kids on Wheels Parade. Please register online to participate in this service project. June 26th Service – Ready 2 Read Book Clean Up & Inventory

With year two of Ready 2 Read winding down, it’s time to prepare the classroom libraries for next year. Join our newest members for their first service project on Saturday, June 26^th from 8:00 a.m. to noon at our annual Ready 2 Read Book Clean Up and Inventory. This service project protects the $125,000 investment made by the Club for classroom libraries and offers an opportunity to mingle with new members.

Help Rotaract throw a fiesta of food and fun for the families and children staying at Birmingham’s Ronald McDonald House on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Many families travel far from home to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children. The treatment may last a day, a month, or even longer. Ronald McDonald House charities offer families a way to stay together, in proximity to the treatment hospital, and be comfortable and cared for during their stay.

April 10th Service – Habitat for Humanity

Join Rotaract and Habitat for Humanity on Saturday April 10th to help build a home for Danyetta Seals and her family.

The project will take place between 7:30 am and 4:00 pm. Rotaract would love to have members sing up for 2 shifts (7:30 – 11:30 or 11:30 – 4:00). Please click here to register to work. We will need between 20 and 25 volunteers for each shift.

Danyetta was born in Birmingham and spent several years living in Texas. She returned to Birmingham in middle school and graduated from Ensley High School. Danyetta is employed with Children’s Health Systems at Children’s Hospital as an Office Medical Assistant. She hopes to return to school to earn her associates degree as a radiology technician. In her free time, Danyetta enjoys spending quality time with her friends and family.

T’Aundra is in 9th grade at Tarrant High School. She loves animals and wants to be a veterinarian one day. TaMya, who enjoys dancing, is in 7th grade at Tarrant Middle School.

“Thank you for allowing my girls and me this great opportunity,” Dnayetta says. “I feel that by owning my own home my kids and I will have a more stable place to live.”

Rotary Large Club Conference

Do you want to meet the “Hatton Smith of San Diego”, the “Bill Jones of Dallas” or the Executive Director of the Rotary Club of Seattle? The Birmingham Rotary Club is hosting the 2010 Rotary Large Club Conference, February 20-24, 2010. www.lcc2010.org This conference brings together the presidents and executive directors of the largest Rotary clubs in North America.

22 Rotaractors have already signed up to help, but we still need more!!!

Volunteers are needed on Saturday February 20, Sunday February 21, Monday February 22, Tuesday February 23, and Wednesday February 24.

The biggest need is for volunteers is on Saturday and Sunday to pick conference attendees up at the airport and drive them to Ross Bridge. (We have reserved VIP parking at the airport and good directions will be provided).

All volunteers will be invited to attend the Welcome Dinner, Sunday night at Ross Bridge featuring a Southern food dinner, BBQ sauce tasting, live music, free drinks, and a few special surprises.

HEARTS FOR HORIZONS & MERCEDES MARATHON

February 12—14, 2010

Like to run? Want to exercise your commitment to Rotaract and our community? Does serving and sweating sound good?

Join Rotaract as we partner with the Horizons School in their 1^st Annual Hearts For Horizons program.

Established in 1991, the Horizons School has filled a much needed niche for young adults with learning difficulties as these young men and women move from home and high school into the larger arena of adult independence.

The Hearts for Horizons Team was created to promote health and wellness among the Horizons students. Every Horizons student will participate in the BE&K 5K on Saturday, February 13, 2010. On Sunday, February 14, 2010, those student will then cheer on Horizons Team members as they run in the Mercedes Marathon and Half Marathon.

Rotaract will be managing the Horizons School booth at the marathon exhibition, running with students in the 5K, and then helping to transport students to cheering stations during the marathon.

SERVING MEALS AT JIMMIE HALE MISSION

January 13 and 14, 2010

4:45 – 6:30 pm

Rotaract will be serving meals at the Jimmie Hale Mission on January 13^th and 14^th 2010. Since 1944 The Jimmie Hale Mission has been a shelter for the homeless, a rest stop for the weary, a feeding station for the hungry, and a sanctuary for the hurting. For many, the Mission has not been their last stop but the first step toward a changed life.

We need 2 service teams. Each team can have a maximum of 10 people. One team will serve dinner on Wednesday, January 13^th and the other on Thursday, January 14^th.
